MARGO : Material of glacial origin and its fate in the ocean

Carla Pereira-Garcia joins LOMIC and LOG

I am from a town called A Coruña, in Galicia (North of Spain). I got my Bachelor's Degree in Biotechnology by the University of Salamanca and then my Master's in Applied Microbiology at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB). I got my PhD at the UAB as well, although I spend 3 out of 4 years working at the Institute of Marine Sciences (ICM). My PhD is also in Microbiology and I studied the ecology of marine bacteria with the capacity to detoxify mercury from the environment. I heavily focused on the mer genes, which are responsible for the demethylation and the reduction of Hg. I used both cultures and omics to study their ecology and to characterized the processes involved in the detoxification. I came with my wife and dog to Banyuls-sur-Mer for a postdoc with Ingrid Obernosterer (LOMIC) and Urania Christakis (LOG) to study the bioavailability of glacial iron in the Kerguelen Islands. "
