MARGO : Material of glacial origin and its fate in the ocean

First samples

The processing of the first samples collected during the MARGO_LAND expedition (January-February 2023) has started.

In the laboratories of the LOMIC, Rhéa Thoppil, who started her PhD thesis work on the project MARGO, has extracted DNA from bacterial cells. The DNA sequences will allow us to describe the composition of the bacterial communities living in the lakes and rivers of Kerguelen Island and to identify their genetic repertoire.

In the laboratories of the CEFREM, Auguste Lugrin, who is doing a first year Master's internship, has mineralized the particulate matter samples for geochemical analyses by ICPMS. We will thereby determine the concentration of many chemical elements, including iron, and obtain insights about their origin (glacial erosion or not).
